Introduction / History

The Mocoví people are an indigenous group living mainly in the Chaco region of northern Argentina, with communities in Santa Fe and Formosa provinces. Historically, they were semi-nomadic hunters and gatherers who roamed the plains, relying on fishing, hunting, and wild plants for survival. During the colonial period, they faced displacement and cultural pressure from European settlers. Over time, many Mocoví adopted aspects of Argentine culture while preserving their language and traditions.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Today, most Mocoví families live in rural villages or small towns. Agriculture and livestock raising provide food and income, though many households also depend on seasonal work or government assistance. Family life is close-knit, with extended relatives often living nearby. Traditional crafts, such as weaving and woodwork, remain important for cultural identity and income. Community celebrations often include music, dance, and storytelling, blending indigenous customs with national holidays. Common foods include maize, beans, and meat, along with traditional dishes passed down through generations.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Mocoví people identify as Christian, primarily within Roman Catholic traditions, though some evangelical churches are present. While Christianity is widespread, traditional beliefs and folk practices often coexist with Christian identity. Many individuals lack a clear understanding of biblical faith, and there is a need for teaching that emphasizes the gospel and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

What Are Their Needs?

The Mocoví face both physical and spiritual challenges. Poverty and limited economic opportunities make daily life difficult, and access to healthcare and education is often inadequate in rural areas. Spiritually, while churches exist, there is a need for strong discipleship and leadership training to help believers grow in faith and share Christ with others. Resources that clearly communicate God's word in culturally relevant ways would greatly benefit these communities.

Prayer Items

Pray that Mocoví believers will grow in their understanding of Scripture and live out their faith in daily life.
Pray for local churches to become centers of hope and truth, equipping leaders who can teach God's word faithfully.
Pray that soon, Mocovi Christians will take Christ to tribes without a gospel presence.
Ask for improved access to education and healthcare so families can thrive physically.
Pray that the Mocoví will experience the love of Christ and share it with neighboring groups.
